How marketing techniques will help a job seeker

August 30, 2010 Cori Leave a comment

The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines marketing as “the act or process of selling or purchasing in a market; the process or technique of promoting, selling, and distributing a product or service.”

Job seekers are the product or service the company is buying. Understanding marketing techniques will help job seekers selling themselves to a company. They are convincing them to buy their product over their competitors.

Let’s take soup, for example. There are many soups available and companies market and sell their soup as being the best. Some soups are more expensive than others because of how they process it or simply because of the name on the label. As a consumer, how does one choose a soup? Is it based on price, taste, calories, sodium, flavor, noodle shapes? Every customer is different and will buy the soup that appeals to them and possibly buys based on commercials and sales techniques used by the company.

So what does soup have to do with a job search? Job seekers are the soup and the company they are applying to is the buyer. Does the consumer experience high-blood pressure that they would need a low- sodium soup? Does the consumer like chicken soup, cream of mushroom, or alphabet soup? If a job seeker walks into a company trying to sell chicken soup to a vegetarian, what are the chances of making a sale? Zero!

Research the company and see what their needs are. Then, position yourself as the best product. Do not just sell skills; because the 10 other job seekers applying for the job may have the same skills. Sell your achievements and accomplishments from previous positions. Find ways to stand out from your competition. The more a job seeker knows about marketing the better their chances are to win the job.

  1. For true success ask yourself these four questions: Why? Why not? Why not me? Why not now?
  2. A man is literally what he thinks.
  3. All that you accomplish or fail to accomplish with your life is the direct result of your thoughts.

3 Types of Recruiters

June 25, 2010 Cori Leave a comment

If you are thinking about utilizing a recruiter during your job search, understanding the different types of job recruiters is important so you can find the right type of recruiter to help you land that dream job.

Here are 3 types of recruiters:

1.  Contingency Recruiters: Sometimes referred to as headhunters, usually work for a staffing agency and can be self-employed. These recruiters work with various employers to try and fill their job openings with the best candidate. The positions tend to be permanent, direct hire or contract. Contingent recruiters are paid a fee by the employer only if the candidate they present is hired.

2.  Corporate Recruiters:  Work directly for a company and are usually part of the human resources department. Corporate recruiters can be salaried or contract employees of the hiring company.  If you are looking to target specific companies, try doing a search for recruiters that work directly for that company and get connected to the.

3.  Retained Recruiters:  Typically are used for senior level positions. Companies will pay retained recruiters a fee upfront for their services and the recruiters continue to work on the position until the company hires someone or decides to stop using the recruiter.

Straight talk from a recruiter – job searching with careerbuilder.com

May 25, 2010 Cori Leave a comment

Job boards such as careerbuilder.com are still being used by recruiters and employers to search for potential candidates.  Professional and social networking sites have become a hot job searching tool, but they are not going to replace job boards.

Quick Facts about Careerbuilder.com:

  • More than 300,000 employers post over 1 million jobs on careerbuilder.
  • In five years, careerbuilder.com became the nations largest online job site.
  • Careerbuilder.com powers career sites for more than 9,000 websites including 140 newspapers.

I recently went through a recruiting training using careerbuilder and learned some great tips and techniques for searching candidates.  For example, I can upload a job description and careerbuilder will return candidates that match the criteria in that job description.  For a job seeker, this is important to know and it’s worth taking a look at all of the job opportunities that are related to your field and look for keyword trends.  The more your resume matches a job description the better chances your resume will be returned in a search.  Another great tip is that once you find a job, I wouldn’t be so quick to take down your resume from careerbuilder.  Recruiters can search the resume archive which goes back 2 to 3 years.  Most of my searches are for resumes that have been posted within 1 year, but when I’m searching for passive candidates or for a challenging requirement, I search those resumes posted a few years back.  My results?  I find some great candidates who may have recently been laid off or happen to just be starting their job search.

I wouldn’t recommend spending hours on job boards looking for a job, but I do recommend getting your resume uploaded into the careerbuilder database and making sure your resume has keywords that recruiters and employers are searching for.  Take a few minutes every day to do a quick search on any new jobs posted that would match what you are searching for and make changes on your resume every few days to keep your resume active. Recruiters can search resumes that have been edited within the last few weeks or last 3 months, so making little changes on your resume once a week can keep your resume showing up in recent search results.
