Imagine this: after weeks of scouring the classified section of the newspaper, you think you finally found a job that’s perfect for you. You look skim down the list of qualifications. Yep, you were made for this job. You can do that, and that, and that… whoops! You can’t really do that –but you can lie and say you can. If you think you’re the only one who has ever lied on a resume, well think again. According to recent statistics, a whopping 43 percent of people lie on their resumes to increase their chances of employment. While some have managed to pull off their lies in the past, lying on your resume is highly inadvisable. If caught, not only will you endure loads of embarrassment and guarantee being terminated, but you can possibly get blacklisted—and good luck trying to find another job then.

Typical Lies

So what do people lie about anyway? Just about everything from falsifying job descriptions and duties; exaggerating past or current salaries; stretching dates to compensate for gaps in employment or downright inventing employers to add work experience /fill in gaps. Some even lie about their education and credentials. This lie has the most consequences— forging certificates/diplomas or falsely claiming to be a graduate from a particular school is a criminal offense. If employers choose to take you to court, you can be given a hefty fine or even face up to a year in prison. This lie is typically seen more with those who pursue an online education—they either unknowingly (or knowingly) enroll in a “diploma mill.” Whatever you do, do not put a diploma mill on your resume. You will lose all of your creditability.

The Lie Detector

But how will an employer be able to catch you in your lies anyway? There are several different ways actually. First, your potential employer will do several background checks. He or she may first look over your resume lightly and do a couple of Google searches or make a few phone calls to see if you’re worthy of an interview. But even if your resume passes through phase one and you get a call for an interview that does not mean you are “safe.” This is because after the interview is done expect employers to go through your resume with a tooth comb and call every single one of your references and prior employers. Interviewers may or may not do this personally. Typically, companies will hire third party sources to do background checks on potential hires. These third party sources are highly skilled and trained to verify facts. But even if you are offered the job you still aren’t safe. This is because some third party background checkers don’t complete their full investigation until about your third week on the job.

Then of course employers will be able to detect lies about qualifications and experience once in the work place. For example, if you said you could do something and you can’t do it, they will notice. This alone is grounds for termination. So the solution? Don’t lie—it’ll only catch up to you in the end. Instead focus on describing yourself in the best light, but don’t fabricate.

Over the last 6 months, I noticed a trend with job seekers. That trend is being stuck in the resume rut. So much pressure has been put on resumes especially because of all the competition out there. Some of those pressures include:

What is the right resume format?

What keywords should be used in a resume?

Is it necessary to create a resume for every job?

How will the resume stand out over everyone else’s?

Will the resume come up on a keyword search?

Objective, branding statement or personal summary?

The list of resume pressures can go on and on. Those are just a few of the pressures I hear from job seekers all the time when it comes to a resume. The resume is extremely important in the job search process, but getting caught up and confused and pulled in a million directions to create a resume, takes time away from going after the job. Job seekers who are stuck in a resume rut are doing nothing else besides trying to create the “perfect” resume. Guess what? The resume will not get you a job. You can have all the bells and whistles and pay hundreds of dollars on having a resume created and still not get any job offers or even interviews.

While some job seekers are getting caught up in resumes, others are on LinkedIn making connections, being active in industry related groups and networking events and getting job offers. It’s all about positioning yourself to be hired, whether you are actively seeking or positioning yourself for your future.

Don’t let the piece of paper referred to as your “resume” keep you from moving forward in your job search. It’s great to get advice and opinions from friends, family and others in your network, but too many conflicting responses will hold you back from creating an excellent marketing tool.

The resume is one part of your job search and as I mentioned earlier, a very important part, but it’s not “the most” important part of your job search. The reason I think it’s not the most important part is because I hear plenty of stories from co-workers over the past 11 years recruiting and you would be shocked to know how many people get hired without a resume. It’s all through word of mouth, referrals, networking and the resume was only used as part of the hiring process.

If you are in a resume rut, it’s time to get out. Make a decision on how to create your resume, get it done, make sure your LinkedIn profile is just as dynamic as your resume and start moving forward.

Over the last five years, I sourced for companies that wanted candidates with industry experience. Companies such as Siemens, Grainger and Honeywell, are looking for candidates that not only have the capabilities, but come from the same industry.

When I am mining the internet for candidates, I search for industry. For example, the positions I’m sourcing for now require automotive or consumer product goods industry experience. I’m not familiar with every single company out there and it is time consuming to look up company names to find out what industry it’s in. I use keywords such as automotive, cpg, consumer product, medical device and others to find candidates within that industry.

The opening statement on a resume also referred to as objective or personal branding statement, should state three things about you.

Who you are

Your biggest strength

The benefit you offer a company

Who you are
This is similar to a job target or the title of position you are applying for. It tells the employer what you specialize in. For example: C# Software Developer, Human Resources Manager, VP of Marketing, Account Manager.

Your biggest strength
Highlight your biggest strength that would benefit an employer. Employers want to know what you can do for them and how you will be able to do it. For example: developing new business, solving complex problems, improving processes, creating marketing campaigns.

The benefit you offer a company
The last part of the opening statement tells the employer what benefit you offer them by being who you are and your biggest strength. It tells the employer why you are an asset to them and how they will benefit by hiring you. For example: reducing down-time, increasing profits, improving production, reducing turn-over, saving the company money

The opening statement should be an attention grabber and make the reader want to find out more about you. Here’s an example of an opening statement after you put together the three parts listed above.

Example of opening statement
Human Resources Manager establishing new personnel programs for hiring, training, and motivating new employees which reduces turnover by 50%.
